Leto, glorious girl, daughter of Titans, is the mother of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis by Zeus. Hera, Zeus’s wife, became jealous and forbade her from giving birth on terra firma (solid ground) so Leto sought refuge on the floating island of Delos, which Zeus anchored down for the occasion. She is the protector of motherhood and was adored by her two children. The Homeric Hymn to Artemis concludes: Leto with the beautiful ankles bare glorious children supreme among the immortals in counsel and in deed. Hail to you, children of Zeus and glossy haired Leto!
