Behind every great man there is an even greater woman. Hera, wife to Zeus, is the unquestionable first lady of Olympus and protector of marriage and childbirth. Fierce, charmingly manipulative and strikingly elegant she is the perfect combination of power and poise. Her plans to assist the Greeks in the Trojan war involve the distraction of Zeus therefore in Homer’s words: she combed her glossy locks in braids, a style suitable for an immortal goddess. Then she wrapped around herself a divine gown, which Athena made for her from pure silk and adorned it with marvellous embroidery. She pinned the gown around her breast with golden brooches. Around her waist she put a belt of a hundred tassels and splendid earrings in her pierced ear lobes, each with three glittering gemstones that shone gracefully. She then proceeded to veil herself, the queen of goddesses, and placed a delicate new shawl, white as the sun, on her head and over her velvety feet she slipped beautiful sandals. The Greeks did indeed conquer Troy…
